BAM Broadcast Excellence Award

This BAM award recognizes outstanding contributions by an active private broadcaster in Manitoba. Previously known as the Broadcaster of the Year Award and the Pioneer Award, the Broadcast Excellence Award will be handed out at the yearly BAM Conference. Please note that duplicate nominations will not be considered in our process, only one submission per nominee is allowed. Deadline is May 30, 2008.

2007 Broadcast Excellence Award

Jon was born in Worcester, Massachusettes. He began his formal education at Clark University studying Fine Arts, followed by time in North Hollywood, California, studying at the North American Institute of Animation. This training lead to jobs in Atlantic City, Boston, and finally back to L.A. drawing "Fruity Pebbles" commercials for Hanna Barbara. In 1989 Jon moved to Canada and began his journey on the road to television. Jon began doing standup comedy in Winnipeg, and was soon touring across the country. Jon has had the opportunity to work with a diverse group including Tom Jones, Celine Dion, and locally, Doc Walker. In 1997 he began his first television gig, working on-air for CBC's Coleman and Company. In 1999 A-Channel signed on the air and launched a live 2 hour local morning show. Jon began greeting Manitobans from various locations around the province each and every morning. After a few years of traveling the Province Jon moved into the studio, and has been hosting Breakfast Television, now on Citytv, ever since.

When he isn't on-air Jon stays busy performing comedy. When he isn't on stage Jon is currently working on illustrating his third children's book, and writing his first novel. Over the years Jon has given countless hours to local charities. Some highlights include; In 2002 Winnipeg Harvest organized a "Poverty Challenge" where participants had to live for a week with only $20 to spend on food and entertainment. Jon took that challenge in front of his viewers and with a camera following him daily he finished, helping to raise awareness for Winnipeg Harvest.

Over the past 7 years Jon has emceed the Riverview Health Centre Foundation Cycle on Life" ride. Jon and his son have both ridden in this event every year. Over its 9 years this ride has raised over half a million dollarsfor the foundation. Jon also works with the Huntington's Indy Go-Kart challenge, Winnipeg Pet Rescue, and The Children's Wish Foundation of Manitoba and Nunavut. In 2003 Jon was recognized with 2 Blizzard Award nominations, and he brought home the hardware for the Best Current/Public Affairs series, "Jon's Poverty Challenge". Citytv Winnipeg received a Gold Ribbon Award from the Canadian Association of Broadcasters in 2006 for the series “Jon’s Poverty Challenge”.

Jon currently resides in Winnipeg with his wife, two children, 2 dogs, 2 cats and a tank of assorted marine creatures. He considers it an honour to showcase Manitoba to the rest of Canada every morning.
